LANDSCAPE MASTERCLASS

 MULTI LEVEL FOCUS FOR STUDENTS TO EXPLORE MANY IDEAS AND TECHNIQUES THAT ARE SUITABLE FOR THE DESIGN AND CREATION OF ORIGINAL LANDSCAPE QUILTS. .

Renown for her ’Window View´ approach to landscapes, Julie's landscapes use multiple views that evoke memories from different times of the day. These “Window View” quilts  came from the demand for commissioned quilts where clients wanted to explore more complex ideas within the one picture frame.

In this class, Julie will share her art and design skills and techniques that she uses to design and create her prize winning landscape quilts. Class options may also include working in a series and designing for a triptych. Drawing skills not essential but a desire to be creatively challenged will be encouraged.

 

Day one

Essential understanding for landscape design; how to incorporate key landscape design elements and principles and use them to your artistic advantage. Students will create a portfolio of small glued and or stitched samples to accompany Julie’s comprehensive and beautifully illustrated teaching notes.

 

Day two

Colour and create unique fabric samples suitable for landscapes using fabric paints, fabric pens and printmaking (for texture and surface design). Colour mixing and special effects will be incorporated during the day.

 

Day three

Designing pictorial landscapes that are created using either Window View inserts, a multiple view focus, a series or suite, a triptych or even stained glass techniques fro landscapes. These will be based on a range of photos and imagery that students have prepared. Designing a cartoon, and preparation of fabrics for individual quilts will be included.

 

Day four to six.

Julie will work 1:1 with students as they create their chosen work using custom painted fabrics and commercial ( Bali type) fabrics. Raw edge applique, layering of transparent fabrics,and embellishment will be demonstrated. Borders and quilting techniques to enhance your quilt design will assist students to complete their wall quilt.
