‘PAINTED SKY SILHOUETTES’

A WORKSHOP TO INSPIRE SOME SMALL LANDSCAPE ART QUILTS             (A3 size), USING YOUR OWN PHOTOS AND HAND PAINTED SKIES AS INSPIRATION.

This class is suited to all levels of quilt making, especially those beginners who wish to venture into creating their own landscape quilt designs or perhaps art quilts. Practicing on postcard size samplers, students will explore simple design elements including composition, atmospheric and linear perspective. Colour mixing, tonal gradations as well as raw edge applique and free machine embellishment will be demonstrated for use in samples. Drawing skills not required.

DAY one

Paint (using fabric paints that mimic the look of hand dyes) some glorious fabrics suitable to use in a variety of ways for landscapes or small quilts. We will sun print for landscapes, then layer, wash, sponge and paint skies as little A4 samples. Then after lunch, we will paint larger; A3 ish size fabrics to suit the students’ own images ( personal photos or teacher provided imagery and patterns) to use as background to make their own landscape quilt.
DAY two & three

This session will focus on each student beginning their own quilts, using their hand painted sky fabrics as well as some commercial fabrics. Julie will help you to design and layer the materials to then stitch and assemble a small wall quilt. Creating co ordinated fabrics for framing your image will also be included.

A really achievable and successful approach is to use a hand painted sky combined with a silhouette (from another picture) or a simple landscape to use for the foreground- like the little windmill quilt.

Materials fee; Approx. $25 Students please pay on the first day. This covers paints, inks, crayons, pens and textas etc for sample size projects.
